Welcome to, the personal homepage of Brandon Purcell. I started building many, many years ago to share information I ran across everyday in my role as a Support Engineer and Consultant for Macromedia/Adobe. As a support engineer and consultant I always had a lot to blog about but as I moved into managment roles at Adobe my technical content dwindled.

I currently work as the Director of Technology for Universal Mind. My primary responsiblity is managing the SpatialKey project and it has been an amazing experience. I have been spending a lot of time working with Amazon Ec2 and will share my experiences through the blog in the future. I truly believe that Cloud Computing is the IT platform of the future and we have built the SpatialKey architecture on top of Ec2.

If you are using J2EE Clustering and session replication with Coldfusion MX 6.1 then Updater 1 offers two important hot fixes that gives you a reason to install it. The following issues are addressed in the Updater

  • 53765 - When Coldfusion MX 6.1 was deployed on clustered Macromedia JRun servers with session replication and J2EE sessions enabled, it would throw a Null pointer exception when the cflock tag was used to lock Session scope.

  • 53913 - In clustered J2EE configurations on JRun if you tried to store a structure in the Session scope and used session replication, the session became corrupted if the request failed over to another server.

The updater can be downloaded at thefollowing location. The issues fixed in the release can befound here

Hi Brandon, This is not clustering related, but I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how to deploy the updater across multiple instances? I applied the upadter but it only ran against the default cfusion instance. I am weary of copying these files across instances as I don't want to lose my configuration settings (creating a cfmx CAR as a backup option is sadly not working for me).

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have! Cheers Greg

During the install it asks you which CF instance you want to upgrade. Why wouldn't you just run it once for each instance you wish to upgrade.

That's exactly what I ended up doing. I was just hoping for a quicker, i.e. all in one solution. It's not a major problem, just one of those things that could make life a little easier. Especially considering the push to use instances that MM were doing.

Seems to make sense to me to have a process that would update all instances in one go (even if it meant simply specifying all the instances set up when applying the patch first time round).

Thanks for your input though!

Greg, I am in the same situation as you are. I badly needed the Updater, as the application I am using JRun Clustering for uses structures in the Session Scope. CAR's are not working for me with my current configuration, although I do have a current open incident with MM support on this.

Does anyone know of a good place to go to get support with JRun clustering? I setup two instances of ColdFusion clustered on JRun 4 and everything was great but after a server restart now only one of the instances is being used by the cluster and nothing seems to get things back working again. Know of any usergroups that might focus on this type of problem?

The House of Fusion site has a JRun specific mailing list, you could always try to post your question there.
